Everyday Witches

Over and over again, in my writing, the concept of magical/moral responsibility has been popping up. I’m no expert, but I’ve always enjoyed philosophy and I’ve been having fun toying with the concept in my novel. In building the world where the witches live, I’ve had to come up with a social construct that keeps them all on the same page. The witches my story are based on are good and are concerned with the overall welfare of Earth and its inhabitants. And since their way of life adds a new dimension to the trouble they could potentially make, it seemed prudent to make magical responsibility a big part of their upbringing.

I remember watching the X-Men cartoons as a kid and I loved the way they’d sometimes show Professor X having serious discussions with his students over a similar concept, how to balance having great power with using it responsibly. (I feel like Marvel has never been the same since Stan Lee died; he had a way of blending his own awesome edgy style with a moral, compassionate side that I feel is unfortunately lacking now.)

Anyway, the issue has come up several times in scenes that I’ve written and I’ve been planning an upcoming scene that will feature Jude teaching the young witches about the witchier side of life and all it entails. I’m looking forward to exploring the possibilities and enjoying the reminiscing!
