So my family has been away again this week, leaving me with way too much time for introspection, and a lot of time for writing. (Which has turned out wonderfully by the way, I’ve already finished next week’s chapter and just need to get it edited now!) And I’ve been thinking a lot about what I want to accomplish with this whole thing.
On a serious note, I started this book a few months ago after looking death in the face and somehow making it through. I almost lost my teenage son and it was the most terrible thing I’ve ever experienced in life. One day he was your perfectly average teenager and in the blink of the eye he was broken and battered and on death’s doorstep. After several surgeries and a few rough months, he’s finally mostly recovered and doing much better; but going through that experience with him sent me into an introspective spiral that inspired me to reach for something more.
I started thinking about the world we’re giving to our children, and also what we want to leave behind when ultimately we face death’s door ourselves. I know that in this digital world we’ve created, the practice of reading novels for leisure might soon go the way of fax machines and mail order DVD’s; but I have always had a deep love for the written word, having been an avid reader all my life. So I decided that this is where I’d like to leave my mark, however large or small. I love fiction and the supernatural and I have been writing for a long time. I attempted publishing some years ago but shied away from the process when the publishing world turned out to be so vast and daunting. I decided that this time around I’m going to hold myself accountable along the way and really give it a fair shot.
I’d like to show my son that it’s not impossible to reach for our dreams and to attempt to shine a little light on the things that are important to us; and hopefully create something that’s magical (literally and figuratively, in my case) and amazingly cool at the same time. Maybe there’ll be money in it somewhere along the way, and maybe someone will pick up the book and be glad to be able to experience the world that I’ve created; but either way I’ve put a little bit of my heart out into the world and also shown my son that it’s worth it to try to reach for the stars.
If you’d like to check out the novel- Everyday Witches: chapter listing has the story to date, posted a chapter at a time. And stay tuned for the latest chapter that will be out next week!
